Denial is not a river in Egypt

Finally had to admit it…the MS Bike Ride drawing was not going well. For one thing, it’s badly out of perspective, and the fellow far to the left is out of place and really badly drawn. So, though I hate to discard hours of hard work, I had to trash it. I’m sure I’ve learned a lot from having started this that I will transfer into the new version, but for now, here’s where it stands.blanksheet

Okay, eraser crumbs and all

I tend to include diversity of people in my work. I guess that’s because I live in the most diverse county in the country, Queens, NY. That’s my world. So I was a little surprised when looking for copy for this drawing…all the bike riders I found were white!

I discussed this with my contact, and he said, originally, MS was thought only to affect people of European descent, although now it is known it affects other groups, too. So, I guess that’s the reason there are so many whites in these pix.
Well, here’s the first WIP, and I’m making everyone white….except I screwed up the fellow on the far left. I may make him another ethic group to cover up. So, I’ve shared a dirty little creative secret of mine.msbikewip1

Stuck!

Between stress on the paying job, and other distractions, I haven’t gotten around to work on the MS Bike Ride. Now that I’m looking at it, I realize I have a lot of two very hard things to draw….figures and bicycles, and realizing figures ON bicycles is doubly hard.
For those of you who have applied to RISD (Rhode Island School of Design, you will remember that drawing a bicycle is one of the requirements of the application. I feel I did a pretty good job, but due to the fact that I was literally crazy at the time, I could not complete my application. Oh, well.

So, I’m starting to plug away at this drawing, without a clue as to what I am doing. Not much to show right now, but I thought I’d let you all know why I hadn’t posted in a while.

Bike Tour…first sketch

When I decided to look for charity work, my first thought was to contact my friend’s husband. This man is very involved in all sorts of causes, but he is also a person living with MS. Our lives were also touched, when another man living with MS, took his own life to avoid the progression of the disease.
Well, the bike tour….when you draw anything as complicated as bicycles and figures, you really should have a photographic reference. Since there is a copyright issue in using photos, I intend to change the figures I’ve taken from the photo as much as possible. So, here’s the first sketch.

Connecticut Fantasy Finish

As I was going to work yesterday, our landlord came bursting out the back door. He wanted to show us that there were berries falling all over our car, and to be careful. Then he pointed out a tree I hadn’t noticed before. A mulberry.
Mulberries are found in Connecticut. There were two in my childhood yard. Like magnets, they attracted birds and squirrels looking for a good meal. I wouldn’t be surprised, if at night, they were scavenged by raccoons, too. That is, when the raccoons were finished knocking over the garbage cans.
So, on the left side of the drawing, I included a mulberry tree. It gave me a chance to put in some red and pink colored dots to break up the green. I softened the tree on the right, put in some finishing touches, and Voila! Connecticut Fantasy is finished.

Connecticut Memories

Been working on the piece. Thinking about it, brings back many memories. I spent most of my life in Connecticut. My mentor once remarked, “Connecticut should be called the green tree and stone wall state”. Which is true.

The landscape there is beautiful, many moods, variety of textures. I’ve decided to add some animals, squirrels and birds…it wouldn’t be authentic without them. So here’s where it stands now.ctfantasywip3
