It’s a Secret

I bet you’ve been wondering why I haven’t been posting.  Well, no, not really, I expect you all have lives other than reading my blog.  But the truth is I haven’t posted for a while…and there’s a good reason.  I’m working on a drawing, but it’s a secret.

Why keep it a secret?  In some cases, I suppose, fears of plagiarism, thinking someone might steal your incredible idea and come out with a work, first.  Or maybe, it’s a work that so stupendous, you don’t want to lessen the “Wow” factor when it’s done.  Or maybe it’s a gift for someone who reads this very blog.  Yeah, it’s the latter.

So, in the meantime, I’ve got my show up at the restaurant “The Opendoor” in Long Island City, Queens, NY.  Also, a drawing of mine has been accepted into a juried show, “Woman Up”, organized in celebration of Women’s History Month.  My contribution, if you haven’t already seen it on this blog is “Black Madonna”.

Soundview Park Festival

Yesterday was the festival for which I neglected artwork, and housework for. I had a good time, but, no sales. I feel I might have been successful if I had done some small portraits of people for not too much money. It was a very child oriented event. Lot’s of face painting and arts and crafts for kids.

I did get some good exposure though…gave out some cards, and magnets. Little by little I’m getting the equipment together to do more high end outdoor shows, too. I bought some gridwall. I also found that an EZ up tent that costs over $400 on Dick Blick, is available at KMart for $149. Promptly put one on layaway.

I may do the show again, next year, but better prepared. So, now, back to work on “Scraggly Weed”.

Scrambling

The day job took over last week, worked extra hours, no time for artwork. Hell, though, I need the money. I’m tired as a dog now, can’t really do any work on scraggly weed, which is beginning to look like Audrey II in “Little Shop of Horrors”.

Last week, I answered an ad for an art show. I was selected, with only one week to get ready for it. It’s on August 11, in Soundview Park in the Bronx for any of you in the area. It starts at 11:00 am.

The nice thing, is that I didn’t have to pay a fee, it was barter for a donation to their fundraiser. I’m giving them “Refuge”, which I’m sure I posted before.

So, I’ve got to get a black tablecloth, and find someway to display all this stuff. Now that I have a smartphone, I can take credit cards. So, with any luck at all…..

Upcoming Art Show

Just to let you know, my work will be in the Greenpoint Gallery’s portrait show.  I am exhibiting “Embracing My Inner Cat” and “Disco”.

Here’s a little bit about the gallery and show.

https://www.facebook.com/greenpointgallery?hc_location=stream

It’s a one night show.  It starts at 8:00 pm and goes into the wee hours.  I’ll check in for a while, but doubt I’ll be around for the whole thing.  At midnight, they do a people’s choice award, but I don’t really expect to win.  My work is not the “Knock ‘Em Dead”, kind of work that usually wins.  Subtlety doesn’t work well with crowds, wine, live music, etc.   Hopefully, there will just be  people who enjoy my work there, and possibly a sale.ImageImage

My Big Break

The art reception is over, and now I’m a famous artist!  Or, not, depends on how delusional I am on any given day.

The reception went well.  Turned out to be just a few friends, and we all had a nice visit.

Just what I was expecting, I don’t know.  I was incredibly anxious on the way to Birch Coffee, and on the verge of hyperventilating.  Frankly, I was going back and forth between visions of having all my work down, lined up against the wall, and being instructed to get it the hell out!  Or the other swing, a crowd of people, just waiting to meet the newly discovered great artist.  So, everything turned out okay, no complaints here.

Thanks to all my friends who came.

The one thing left, is which picture will be left behind.  As part of the agreement, Birch Coffee will take one of my drawings in exchange for displaying my work.  I kept the work out of the shop that I really wanted to keep.

Bets from my friends as to which will go: House at Sunrise

I should start a pool.

Another thing I’ve decided, is to make “Embracing my Inner Cat”, as not for sale.  I’ve started using it as a trademark, and also, it is a picture of my dear cat, Hannako.  For those of you who have never seen it:

“Construction” had been finished, but I’m waiting for better light to photograph it.

I’m showing!

Today’s the day of the reception, and it’s been a busy week.  Other events have taken me away from preparations for the show….a leaky kitchen pipe, and my cat has a bad tooth.

So, the show is tonight, and I’m rolling change to buy wine.  Money that I thought I’d have by today hasn’t come through.

So, things are a little tense right now, but I’m determined to have a good show.

For those of you who might not recognize Birch Coffee, it’s right near the Gershwin Hotel, and next to the Museum of Sex.
