I’ve completed “Companions”. I also viewed a video by Roger Scruton on beauty in art. It gave me a lot to think about.
The video is about the purpose of beauty to connect with the divine, and to transcend the tragedies of ordinary life. But how do we decide what is beautiful?
I’ve been over this in the past. I think appreciation of certain things being beautiful is hardwired into us, just as we are hardwired (so they say) to see babies as cute, and want to take care of them. There is also a genome that has been isolated that determines if someone will be spiritual and believe in God.
It all sort of makes ordinary out of what we consider sublime. But what of the mystery of how humans became what they are?
