Beauty

More on the idea of beauty.

I guess in the physical (non-art) world, there is a consensus about what is beautiful. I find people coming into the gift shop where I work tend to ooh and aah over the same items. Just what is it they all find so pretty?

I can’t figure it out. Maybe I’m burnt out, but there doesn’t seem to be any tangible way of measuring it. My work is based on the idea that everyone brings their own associations to the objects they see, but that doesn’t explain why so many people respond to the same design on an item. Or color, for that matter.

There are harmonious shapes based on mathematical formulae, but I don’t buy that completely. It’s not the solution to everything beautiful.

I really don’t get it. If anyone has any thought on this, I’d like to know.

In the meantime, here’s Park Avenue.
