I, Me, Mine

Channeling a little George Harrison, there…….

It seems to me that I talk about myself and my art a lot here.  I guess that’s normal, after all, it is my blog and it is supposed to be artsy.  Also, these are the subjects I know best,

The portrait above is me, a few years back.  I’m not really into doing self portraits.  Why would I want to do that, when there are so many more interesting and beautiful subjects to be drawn?

Another topic I know a lot about is retail. I’ve worked in it for so many years, and it’s changed in stores since the internet became the competition.

It used to be enough to ask a customer if she needed help, and leave her alone if she just wanted to look.  Now it’s all about “asking  open ended questions”, to get the customer to talk about herself, giving the impression of sincere interest.  In the meantime, you are listening with the motive of finding out about her, to find something to sell to her. You step in like a vulture when you’ve got it.  Seems pretty dishonest to me.

ARMCHAIR

On the other hand, a friend of mine asked about making conversations with strangers to make a friend.  Again, the solution is to get that person to talk about herself.  If you can listen with sincere interest, you’ll make a friend.

So, I’ve managed to not talk about myself a little.

And some subjects aren’t subjects at all. Just a note, the drawing in this post are pretty random.

So, I don’t do many portraits, self or otherwise.  I find getting a likeness difficult, even if I do the tried and true.

The Idea That Would Not Die…

I finished the self-portrait in very little time.  I thought it would take several days, and I would fill in with humorous, anecdotal experience with my portraiture education and professional portraiture stories.  Like the blond boy with glasses who requested I make him look like Fonzi.  If you don’t know who Fonzi is, you have my admiration.

So, here’s the self-portrait.  Plan to use it as  a logo, sample, etc.

So, now what?  I really should be getting ready for this designer/art fair, but there’s not a lot to do until some items I ordered arrive.  With a hint of fall chilliness in the air, I’m returning to the IDEA THAT WOULD NOT DIE.

Bye, Bye, Love

Imagine a love story, of a beautiful young man and woman, full of passion, the usual sex, drugs, and rock n roll…..living together, not living together, other women, other men… And the young man dies in the end.

It would make a great movie, but it was hell to live through.  It’s the story of my first love.  Now that I’ve been in a relationship currently for several years,it’s time to let go of the past.

Which means, having recently found my old love’s sister, I’ll be sending her this drawing of my love I did from snapshots after he passed.  It’s a work I think of as one of my best.  So, time to move on and send it on….to a home where it can be openly loved.

Sunnyside is not so sunny

Couldn’t live without the man I love, so I moved back in.  I live in a community called Sunnyside in Queens, NY.  A lot of the pictures I drew were objects in this little community.

But to my dismay, they’ve wrecked some of them.  Remember “My Brain off Drugs”?

jungle gym

The whole park, playground and all, has been bull-dozed.  Supposedly, they’re going to rebuild and make a better park.  They’re doing this just in time for the school children’s summer vacation, and in time for construction workers to get heat exhaustion.

I always saw kids using this jungle gym, what a waste,

Remember “Scraggly Weed”?

??????????????????

The neighborhood fuss-budgets won out….the bush has been hacked down to a stump.  I’m glad I memorialized it when I did.

As for what I’m doing now….just for fun, I’m doing glittery, rhinestoney, Pop Art portraits of celebrities.  Well, in all honesty, I’ve just done one so far: Michael Jackson.

I put it on Ebay to find out if I get any reaction.  I figure, I”ve got all this glitter and rhinestones left from the Namaste series, why not play?

What’s Michael Jackson doing in here?

In an effort to do affordable items at fairs, I’ve decided to do small portraits, that I can mat. I’m starting to make samples….both of adults and children. I decided to do one celebrity to show I can do a likeness, so I chose one that is universally known…so here is my quick sketch of Michael Jackson!

I’m no stranger to doing a portrait of this guy. I am ashamed to admit, I jumped on the bandwagon after his death and did a portrait for sale. It sold for a little over the cost of materials. I wish instead I had given it to charity. But it’s over.

Black Madonna…the finish

If you’ve already done the hard work on a drawing, the rest goes fast. Plus, I was truly inspired doing this, so I spent more of my time on it.

As I worked in it, I decided to use metallic pencil. That’s something I normally don’t do, because I always envisioned selling my work as prints. But as I did it in this, I decided to make the picture more like a medieval icon. I made her robe the blue of lapis lazuli, for instance.

I’m very pleased with this. Soon, I will be entering a juried competition, and although it costs money (something I rarely do, unless it’s free), I will be entering “Black Madonna”. I feel I have a good chance at this show, I’m familiar with the people jurying it, and they have seemed to like my work in the past.blkmdnnafinish

Royalty….at last

First a note about Scraggly Weed. As I was looking out my window, I noticed another artist was attracted to the plant on which my drawing is based. This time, a photographer, with a zoom lens, taking a close up of one of the fronds. Don’t know if he managed to capture a butterfly. Anyway, I think returning to Scraggly Weed in the winter, when summer memories are cherished, will be a good idea.

So, here’s the progress on Black Madonna. Decided to give her royal robes, but I’m thinking of ways to make them into a more interesting design.

I also aged her a bit for two reasons…..one, the woman in my dreams was older than this woman. The other, I’m trying to make the portrait look even less like the woman it doesn’t look like. blkmdnna1
