Originality is for nerds

In my own backyard…Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.

When I was a teenager, another student asked me, “Why do you always draw trees?”

I like trees, and I still do. Not to mention, there are a lot of them

So,shoot me. I may draw the same subject over and over. If that’s good enough for Monet, it should be good enough for me.

When I was living in Queens, most of my drawing subjects came from my own block.

Another for instance

So,don’t be under the impression that there’s nothing inspiring out there.

Do like Picasso, and so many of the masters.

Do the same subject matter over and over again.

You don’t have to travel far…

I never did get around to the man with the parrot on his shoulder, though.

An Enforced Rest

My paper didn’t get here yesterday, as scheduled.  It’s still in Pennsylvania, somewhere.  Delayed, by weather, I’m assuming, although Fed Ex isn’t really clear about that.

It’s serendipitous.  If I had my paper, I’d probably feel I had to do a big project.  As it is, I’m getting informal drawing practice in.

I’m drawing trees, or more precisely, parts of trees.  I’m working from life, and the light changes far too fast, to draw a whole tree.  So, don’t expect any fantastic drawings of complete trees.  This is just an exercise to sharpen my skills, and leave the whole issue of what to do next. Just leave it.

Trees are abstract in their own ways.  They have a structure, but a very loose, and random one.  It’s a bit like putting together a very complex jig-saw puzzle, fun and frustrating at the same time.

Here’s an example of something I drew a few years ago, that gave me the same feeling.

Sunnyside is not so sunny

Couldn’t live without the man I love, so I moved back in.  I live in a community called Sunnyside in Queens, NY.  A lot of the pictures I drew were objects in this little community.

But to my dismay, they’ve wrecked some of them.  Remember “My Brain off Drugs”?

The whole park, playground and all, has been bull-dozed.  Supposedly, they’re going to rebuild and make a better park.  They’re doing this just in time for the school children’s summer vacation, and in time for construction workers to get heat exhaustion.

I always saw kids using this jungle gym, what a waste,

Remember “Scraggly Weed”?

??????????????????

The neighborhood fuss-budgets won out….the bush has been hacked down to a stump.  I’m glad I memorialized it when I did.

As for what I’m doing now….just for fun, I’m doing glittery, rhinestoney, Pop Art portraits of celebrities.  Well, in all honesty, I’ve just done one so far: Michael Jackson.

I put it on Ebay to find out if I get any reaction.  I figure, I”ve got all this glitter and rhinestones left from the Namaste series, why not play?
