Going Gold

It’s getting close to Labor Day.  Already, the trees around here are showing some touches of orange and gold.  I’m looking forward to cooler weather, and the autumn colors.  Yes, even I get tired of summer.

The last few drawing I’ve done have been green.  I’m getting a little bored, and want to shake it up a bit.

I’ve been thinking of the old neighborhood, back in New York City. Honestly, I don’t miss it much, except for a few neighbors and a couple of the outdoor cat.  This time of year, though, is the time that the butterfly weed is in bloom, gathering its winged admirers.  In case you don’t remember the drawing, here’s a revisit:

IMG_0426As for today, the most artwork I’ve done recently is for the Danbury Rocks project.  I’m made quite a few more.  I’m learning to incorporate the veins and planes of the rocks, making them more organic instead of geometrical  Here’s the latest batch:

Friends Don’t Let Friends Draw Drunk..or Sleep Deprived

There was, however, no friend around at the time, so sleep-deprived, I drew. And I drew some more.  I thought I’d completed the drawing I was working on.  However, in the bright morning light…my picture looked like a mess of scribbles.  Okay, somewhat orderly scribbles, but scribbles none the less.

Fortunately, not all is lost, I think I can go back over it, and make it look more as if a human, as opposed to chimpanzee, drew it.  I worked today, though, at my day job, so I’m tired, so tired.  If I don’t want to make the same mistake twice, I’d better lay off of it for now.

But…earlier in the day, my friend and I did a lot of work on our decorated rocks.  So, here’s my first Danbury Rock, ready to go .

Danbury Rocks! Or, A Trip to Michael’s

It’s been a day when all I’ve done in the real, concrete world of art, is to cut a piece of paper to size, since I finally got my paper delivery.  But, in the world of imagination…

I was with my friend today, who lamented the lack of something crafty to do, for fun, and maybe to give as gifts.  Always an instigator, I suggested a trip to the craft store, to just see what’s out there…

Come to a book on Rock Art…no, I’m not talking about posters for Led Zeppelin or anything like that.  I’m talking painting on rocks.

Which led me to telling my friend about a group, here, called “Danbury Rocks”, The idea is to decorate rocks, and place them around the city for people to find, just to give those people a bit of happiness in this dull, drab world.

So, the idea took hold with my friend, and I decided to join in, too…and then

IT HIT ME!  No, not a rock.

My old Namaste series.  I had so much fun doing it, but the size and bulk of it, meant that they weren’t really feasible as artwork, unless I was someone already famous, like Damian Hirst (perish the thought). So, I was looking for a way to put it on something smaller, three dimensional…I was thinking of boxes, or something like that…

Flash forward to today, and rocks! Yes, it would work!

So, soon I will be painting rocks a la the Namaste series and spreading them around the area.  In the meantime, I’ll still be doing my colored pencil work…the rocks are for pure fun.

For those who don’t remember the Namaste series, here are a few examples:
