Happy End of the Holidays!

Okay, finally….life is back to normal.

I have a little ritual in winter, as the days grow longer.  First off is Yule, then Christmas, New Years, and then January 2nd.  Here’s the drawing that I made in celebration of t hat celebration.

JANUARY 2ND, BY ROXANNE BALDWIN

The ritual includes such things as The Superbowl, and Mardi Gras.  And of course, Imbolc which is a pagan holiday that falls on Groundhog day.

GROUNDHOGDAY

It’s amazing how much more subject matter for the winter there is in Connecticut than NYC.  Snow is particularly unsightly in the city, and the only birds around are pigeons and crows. Of course, there are crows around  here, but they’re pleasant, graceful visitors of the season.

So, I’ve learned to find beauty this time of year…so Happy Rest of the Winter!

Start with what you know….

It’s winter yet again.  Okay, it’s really still fall by the calendar, but who am I to split hairs?  It’s barren, cold, with short days.  Somehow, I feel my artist block melting.

I’ve been prolific in the winter time.  Summer and spring are almost too pretty to come up with something interesting and moody.20170606_212810522996978.jpg

One of my favorites in the past winter:
BLIZZARD

And some from previous years,

WINTERFIELDS

I seem to like crows.

So, here I am, raring to go, but not a clue.  How did I come up with so may ideas in the past?  What do I do now?

So, I remembered my old rule of thumb.  Start with what you know. So, then, I will.

Just a memory for all of you who like cats:  this is the third anniversary of capturing Pumpkin, bringing him to a prettier environment.  A chance to be a domestic cat again, and all the perks that come with it.  Pumpkin, it’s been good.

Here’s That Damned Crow Again

Off topic for a moment, and if anyone one of you is a great interpreter of dreams, input is most welcome.

I have a recurring dream.  I walk in a strange gallery somewhere, and find that my artwork is hanging there.  Surprise to me!  However, it’s in a style of mine that is old, and I don’t really work like that now.  As a matter of fact, in the dream are a lot of drawings that I don’t remember doing.

I have but one example of that old style.  Forgive the quality of the picture, it was taken with an old, not so smart, film camera….way back in the day.  I wish I had more of these drawing…but various moves and such, all but two are gone.

Back to the subject of galleries, which is much on my mind these days.  As I entered some drawings into the Bott Shoppe show, the owner of the gallery told me what sells the most are small accent pictures, and big statement pictures.  Not as much call for my modest, medium sized drawings.

So, I was researching into making a statement picture out of “Floral Overload”.  Can’t you just see this at five foot by five?

So, the main problem is finding a surface to work on. I found something that would work, but at $140.00 plus tax and shipping.  Someday maybe, but not real soon.

So, that leaves me with accent pictures.  Thinking about my old style hangs so proudly in dream galleries, I decided to experiment.

So, here’s that damned crow, again.

A Winter’s Tale…

This winter has been devoted to greeting cards, and gifts.  With my lack of energy in the winter, I’ve had a hard time being able to tackle much in the way of creative work.  Part of my brain hibernates, I swear, and lies dormant until March.

Looking at my previous winter’s output, there a lot of drawings I’m not proud of.  A waste of time and materials.

I also have another type of work I like to do.  I’m thinking of combining decals of my good, spring, summer and fall work, with the elements of Danbury rocks…and make objet’s d’arte.  Also, do the same with functional items…sorry of a Roxanne’s Shabby Chic.  So, I have plans not to waste another winter…..

And as we have this March blizzard outside, I feel more content and inspired than I have f0r months.

I Seem to Have Forgotten Something…

All this while, I was being very secretive about a project I was doing.  I figured I’d unveil the final product once it had been produced as Holiday cards, and given to my coworkers.

However, having had a chaotic month for most of December, I had a complete, senior moment on that.  Or maybe I just forgot. Blame it on age, sure, sounds better.

Here it is, don’t have a real name for it.

Celebrate the return of the light!

Snow Days

I, like most residents of the East Coast, got socked in by the snow.  Darkness or low barometer, I don’t know, but I had little or no energy.  I did not much of anything, either artwise or housework wise.

I decided to do little OSWOA, or Other Small Works of Art, since I am running low on paper.  They are postcard sized, 4 by 6 inch pieces of art. One I did of the snowstorm turned out to be a pretty accurate record of the storm…grey and depressing.  I modified it a bit, and came up with this, which is very faint, the way the details of the landscape were, behind the falling snow.

Not much, eh?  It does give me an idea for a finished piece, though, worth using some of my dwindling supply of big paper.  In the meantime, I leave you with this work from last year: Making Peace with January.

Speaking of Christmas Cards…

The below Christmas card is not mine.  I wish I could claim it, but no, it’s the creation of one of my favorite illustrators, Evynd Earle.

This is from a card that is actually for sale at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Gift Shop, where, once upon a time, I actually worked.

So, since my steam has run out on doing little individual Christmas cards, and I’m devolving into half-asseddness with them, I’ve decided to go back to the idea of a good, winter themed drawing.

I’m thinking of this, from my much younger days:

And to review, this which I just posted a couple of days ago;

And the picture of this door, I snapped earlier in the day:

And from this mish mosh, I’m getting an idea…things the make you go hmmmm…….

Happy Thursday, to all!
