venus and mars are alright, tonight

For those of you who caught my short-lived, remarkably self absorbed post the other day,  I apologize.

But an update, the featured picture “A Western Tao”, is alright after all.  Much to everyone’s surprise, my artwork survived the flood waters.

It’s a drawing of a man and a woman.  Every remember the book “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus”?  This drawing could be an illustration for that. Which brings us to a  quote from a Paul McCartney song:

“Venus and Mars are alright tonight”

Which cleverly segways us into my latest drawing.

Remember I was drawing a picture of the night sky and the Milky Way?  I was struggling to find a good name for it. So I finally decided on a title:

Venus and Mars are Alright Tonight

I had the start of another drawing, but realized it was an image that belonged to my winter depression.  So, my next drawing will be about spring.

Remembering New York City at Christmas

I’ve been dreaming about New York City recently…yes, I do miss, and I don’t. I think of the times when it has been idyllic, the glorious views, the excitement, but then…I gotta remind myself of why I left.

Anyway, in the spirit of remembering what’s good about New York, if you can ignore the stampedes of harried Christmas shoppers, the crowded, cold, drafty subways, the dirty slush….enough already!  It was beautiful in many ways.  The trees, the holiday store windows, the lights and all, and one of my favorite memories, was the Angel Tree at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Despite customers who demanded customer service that was beyond human capabilities, I did get some perks.  At Christmas time, in the medieval section they put up the tree decorated with angels. Looking at it, I got the old feeling that I hadn’t experienced since I was about 9 years old…that of the magic of a Christmas tree.

So, my impression, on my latest card…done from memory, not true to life.  If I had taken a reference photo and drawn it, well, that would be art based on other art, based on other art.  I felt funny about that.

As for Christmas in NYC, I have some haunting memories.  I will leave you with this:

Some people want to fill the world with drawings of people singing silly love songs

Finished “Love Ballad”, it went way more quickly than “Floral Overload”, and I’m just as pleased with it.  I worked using the direction of the pencil strokes to convey movement and sound.  So, here ’tis:

So, now what?

I admit, I ran up against a brick wall when it came to ideas.  Not surprising, since I’m mildly depressed.

So, I decided to take on a project I hadn’t had time for….a self portrait.  In the middle of a clinical depression is probably not the best time to do one, but what the hell. I need it for promotion…make a new logo.

I’m also thinking in terms of what I’m accomplishing in terms of healing with my art.  I’m still doing upbeat and soothing images, that’s not going to change.  But I think to do some real action, I’m going to give a percentage of my profits when (if!) I sell a work to charity.

As a matter of fact, I have my dream set up.  I start a non-profit, selling my work and licensed products, and out of the proceeds, pay myself and an assistant a modest salary….the rest of the money going to various charities.  Ah, dreams.  For those who believe in it, send good energy.

I love Rock N Roll, so put another 99 cents in my iPod, Baby

So, I’ve started on …what’s the name?  Too many to choose from.  The rock singer.  As I originally thought, I’d do a loud colorful drawing, somewhat in the same vein as this that I did a long time ago.

But it’s the time of year when I turn mellow and sentimental.  I call it the bittersweet time of year.  It’s the time left of summer between Labor Day, and the Equinox.  So, a mellower type of healing appealed to me.

So, perhaps “Love Ballad” will be its title.  Tranquility, reflection and all that good stuff.

Here’s the sketch.
